Front Doors
Typical ‘late’ type front door (panelled) in a stone house.
Along with the windows to your house, your front door is a crucial part of your house’s character. The front doors on the early type houses would have been plain timber boarded whilst those on later type houses would have been panelled and more decorative.
Timber front doors would nearly always have been painted in a colour other than white, adding to the vibrant street scene that makes our Valleys houses special.
Front doors are often slightly recessed to create a small sheltered area. Where possible it’s important to retain this recess as it not only helps shelter the door from the sun and rain, it also provides shelter to the occupant on opening the door in bad weather.
