Paintwork

A good rule of thumb for old buildings in general is that render, woodwork and ironwork were always painted, but external brickwork and stone rarely were.

Did you know?

If you paint stonework or brickwork it prevents it from ‘breathing’ and often results in the paint peeling off.

Rich, dark, strong colours are preferable to paler colours for the joinery on old buildings with the exception of the moving parts of sliding sash windows which should usually be painted white or off-white. Bright and attractive colours may be appropriate and add to the character of a street but vivid colours and contrasts should be avoided.

Black or dark green is an appropriate colour for external ironwork.

It is not possible to provide specific advice on colours except that they need careful selection, and a limited range on any one house will generally result in a better appearance.
